U.S. NAVY SELECTS DENVER TO HOST 2009 NAVY WEEK CELEBRATIONS

May 4-10, 2009

The United States Navy is proud to announce that DENVER, Colorado has been selected as a host city for a 2009 Navy Week Celebration. The only city to be offered five consecutive Navy Week events nationally, the Navy wishes to thank Coloradans for their continuing support of the world’s finest maritime force.

Denver Navy Week celebrates the Navy’s mission of keeping global sea lanes open for free commerce, anti-piracy, anti-terrorism, disaster relief and humanitarian assistance. Enhanced global stability is the goal. The opportunity to discuss career and higher education programs will also be made available. This year’s Navy Week will run from Monday, May 4th through Sunday, May 10th.

While no ships will be docking along the Platte River, our F/A 18 Flight Simulator, Navy Divers, SEALs and Sea Air Rescue Swimmers, Rock Climbing Wall, SEAL Desert Assault Vehicle and six person Navy “top 40’s” Band will be on hand to provide entertainment and give participants a taste of what it’s like to be a part of the U.S. Navy “experience.”

Events during the week include performances by Navy Band “Northwest Passage,” and a visit by Rear Admiral Albert Garcia, Deputy Commander, Navy Civil Engineers, Washington, D.C.

The true stars of the show are veteran Colorado Sailors, both past and present. These include Navy Seabees and Sailors from the units based at Buckley Air Force Base and Fort Carson.

Sailors will be on hand at Denver’s Annual Cinco de Mayo Festival, the weekend of May 9th and 10th, to celebrate diversity in the Navy, and join in events surrounding the Colorado Rockies home games. They will also provide visits to local schools, service organizations and hospitals to speak about their journeys around the world, while serving our nation. Additionally, a home renovation is planned in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity.
